Over the summer of 2016, I participated in Worcester Polytechnic Institute's Data Science program through REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates). Essentially an REU is a type of program usually consisting of a group of ten of undergraduates who work closely with the faculty of the host institution. The National Science Foundation funds these programs. In my specific program, I researched on how to quantify data literacy based on different types of different visualizations. I learned Javascript, CSS, and HTML in order to design experiments to put on Amazon Mechanical Turk for my research. Using D3, a JavaScript technology, data visualizations would be modified to see if it made it easier for people to understand against a control. We would use R-Studio to analyze the data for statistical importance. On top of the rewarding academic challenges, I also made long lasting friendships with many important people and had a one of a kind summer!
