Machine Learning and Healthcare

During the summer of 2016, I had the opportunity to intern in Boston with Optum under their Technology Development Program, which was my first-ever experience in the tech industry. The experience was both exciting and nerve-wracking, but it turned out to be an unforgettable one. I made amazing friendships with my team members, who were honestly the highlight of the experience. However, the work was just as crucial. Our team was tasked with a machine learning project that aimed to determine whether or not machine learning could automate the processing of claims that fail out of auto-adjudication.

Coming into the internship, I was overwhelmed by the technologies involved, as I had no prior experience in R, machine learning, Hive Query Language, or even what Hadoop was. The learning curve was immense, but I realized that what I learned from school was applicable and that I could catch up. Over the course of the internship, I was able to apply my programming skills and adapt to the new technologies, contributing to the project's success.

By the end of the summer, I was proud of how far I had come and how much our team had accomplished. It was a humbling experience to work with experienced professionals in the industry and apply my skills to real-world problems.
