In the summer of 2015, I had the opportunity to participate in Worcester Polytechnic Institute's Data Science program through REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates), which is a program funded by the National Science Foundation that involves a group of ten undergraduate students working closely with faculty members at the host institution. During the program, I conducted research on how to quantify data literacy based on different types of visualizations. To design experiments for my research, I learned Javascript, CSS, and HTML and used D3, a JavaScript technology, to modify data visualizations and compare them against a control group to see if they were easier to understand. We then analyzed the data using R-Studio for statistical significance. Besides the academic challenges, I also formed long-lasting friendships with important people and had an unforgettable summer experience.
